The manufacturer Harley-Davidson Inc. has recall nearly 308,000 of its motorcycles, mostly in the United States to correct a problem that can cause switch failures and even brake lights in the rear brakes.

The company said in documents filed last week to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Highway Traffic switches to the brake lights may be exposed to too much heat from the exhaust system, which could cause failure of the lights. The problem, said the document also can cause fluid leakage and loss of the rear brakes.

The problem affects Touring motorcycles, CVO Touring and Trike, models 2009 to 2012. The vehicles were manufactured between June 6, 2008 and September 16, 2011.

Harley-Davidson Inc. said it will notify owners of motorcycles on the withdrawal of the units. Dealers will install a switch for the rear brake light for free. The recall affects about 251,000 motorcycles in the U.S. only, and the rest elsewhere.

Harley-Davidson Inc. said they detected the problem in June 2010 to obtain a report on a motorcycle trike model (pictured) that lost the rear brakes due to the failure. The company began to research, and in July 2011 sent investigators to a dealership in Louisiana to review other motorcycle that was involved in an automobile accident. Harley has not determined whether the problem caused the crash in Louisiana that left one person injured, said Monday Maripat Blankenheim, spokeswoman for the manufacturer.

Blankenheim said unknown how serious are the injuries to the injured person, but said Harley does not know of any other accident or injuries. Harley said in the documents since July 2010 there has been no other reports on the problem.
